5 Beginner Tips For Starting A Sticker Business

Starting a sticker business can be fun and exciting! The possibilities are endless and you can design so many art stickers to your heart's content. But since there are so many possibilities, it can get quite daunting on where to start. I have recently started my own sticker business and wanted to share some tips and tricks with you all about getting started, some key concepts to think about, but overall, just have fun in the process!

1. Identify your audience

There are so many different styles of stickers that you can create, and since the sticker community is huge you need to make sure you are targeting the right people for your sticker products that you intend to make.

Some examples of audiences include:

  • Parents & Mums - With families to maintain and schedules to create, parents often need to plan and organise different appointments, schedules, and other family or house related tasks. This is where stickers come in handy in creating labels for organisation and management.
  • Art Lovers - Dive deep in creating decorative and cute art stickers, these art lovers love to collect and decorate their laptops, journals and notebooks.

There are many more different audiences, with different factors to consider such as age, gender, interest, location and lifestyle.

2. Research your materials

Understand what is needed to create your stickers, some points to consider:

  • Identify the type of sticker material paper you will need or want to use. Examples include matte sticker paper and vinyl sticker paper.
  • Type of printer to use, consider inkjet printers to produce high quality colours or laser printers can also be good to create in bulk.
  • Drawing programs - how will you design the stickers on?
  • Cutting machine - this one is optional, but if you are in it for the long term, it is recommended to invest in one as it removes a lot of the labour work required when cutting stickers. There is also the option to cut many different material types if you want to branch out for different products.

3. Pricing products

After figuring out what kind of materials you want, it is best to calculate all materials, labour, fees and shipping into consideration to make sure you are not underpaying yourself, but it also gives perceived value when you price accordingly. When this is all added up you can then create a markup percentage and that is your profit margin received from the product made.

Example: production costs (materials, labour, fees, shipping) x 50% markup = xyz profit margin

4. Start small

If you're scared of investing too much from the beginning, it is greatly recommended to start in a marketplace. This is where you focus on just your artwork and products, no need to worry about marketing and advertising as these marketplaces have their own users on the site. Once you have the knowledge of how selling online works, you can then try to branch out into creating your own website like mine! Starting in a marketplace is great to gauge a general customer interest, and this is where you can really experiment and switch ideas or products if things don't work out as you intended it to.

5. Have fun!

It is so important to take care of your self, don't overwork too much, set yourself realistic and achievable goals so that you don't burn out. Having fun is the essence in all of this, because without the motivation and excitement, it is hard to keep pushing through.

Thank you for reading until the end and I hope this gave you some insight on what you should think about when creating a sticker business! Or if you are just here to have a read for fun then thank you as well :-)

Take care,
